Excerpt from God and the Supernatural: A Catholic Statement of the Christian FaithThe question is sometimes asked, "Is Christianity a failure" The answer to such a question will largely depend upon a man's temperament or mental outlook: as often as not, upon his ignorance more than upon his knowledge.Before we can say whether Christianity has succeeded or failed, we must know what Christ and His Church set out to accomplish; before we can say whether the Christian creed is still vital or practically dead, we must know what that creed is.The great mass of the English-speaking race, if asked to define positively what Christianity stands for in the world, would find it difficult to give a clear, unambiguous answer. The word "Christianity" has come to mean so much and so little. When it means much it is commonly a strongly-felt but vaguely-understood sentiment; whilst intellectually it may stand for almost anything according to the theory or opinion of the individual.But mostly it means so little: a fashion of speech with no definite idea behind it; a form of worship hardly, if at all, understood.And yet the ordinary English-speaking citizen is not irreligious - still less anti-religious - in sentiment.
